2020 Thousand Champions Against Hunger Campaign

Nearly half a million Connecticut residents struggle with hunger and food insecurity. Our friends. Our families. Our neighbors. Our members.

1 in 8 people in Hartford and Tolland Counties are at risk of hunger, and for children, it’s 1 in 7. That’s 121,000 individuals in those two counties alone, including more than 34,000 children. These statistics were before COVID-19 impacted our communities – it’s significantly higher now! With the ongoing pandemic, food insecurity is more prevalent than ever. Hartford Federal Credit Union is asking you to stand with us and be a CHAMPION AGAINST HUNGER!

When the Credit Union began its Thousand Champions Against Hunger Campaign last fall, we had no idea what a tremendous impact it would have on our communities. Thanks to the generous donations of our employees, members, and business partners we were able to raise over $10,000 and collect 800 pounds of food for area food banks. Through the food banks’ wholesale channels, monetary donations were leveraged into 25,000 meals for people in need. The spirit of community and giving filled us with an overwhelming sense of gratitude, as we witnessed so many people coming together for such an important cause. The funds and food were distributed to five local food banks in March, just as COVID-19 began devastating Connecticut.

Last year, this amazing campaign generated unexpected nationwide recognition. The overwhelming generosity in our communities contributed to Hartford Federal Credit Union receiving two nationwide first-place awards from Credit Union National Association. This could not have been achieved without your support – thank you!

Hartford Federal Credit Union is once again launching its Thousand Champions Against Hunger Campaign. Our goal remains the same – if 1,000 individuals donate at least $10, we will reach our goal of $10,000! The campaign will run through the end of the year and the funds and food raised will be dispersed to local food banks during February/March when they are desperately in need of replenishment after the holidays. We encourage cash donations rather than non-perishable food items because many of our food banks’ collaborate with Foodshare, local retailers and farmers to leverage the monetary donations into more food. This means that when you donate a dollar, you’re able to provide more meals for families than if you donated food you'd purchased at the store. For every dollar donated, food banks can provide two and a half meals!

Please visit any branch location to make a monetary donation or drop off food. Checks can be made payable to Hartford Federal Credit Union with TCAH Campaign in the memo line and mailed to the following address:

Hartford Federal Credit Union’s Thousand Champions Against Hunger Campaign is a compelling example of how together - ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things.
